A Funeral Tribute - A Fitting Remembrance for the Deceased

The death of a member of the family is sure to bring intense pain and heartbreak to the other family members. Sometimes the pain is so strong that the surviving family members are overcome by grief and they feel as if the world has just stopped revolving. There's nothing wrong with grieving. However, bereaved family members must also take the opportunity presented by the unfortunate event to commemorate the life of their loved one and pay him a fitting funeral tribute.

There actually are a lot of ways a family can pay tribute to a member who passed away. The most common is through a memorial service. Almost everyone from all walks of life, no matter what religion they practice, prepare a memorial service for their departed loved ones although the way the service is conducted varies depending on several factors like cultural customs and traditions, family budget and belief of the deceased.

Repose

This type of funeral tribute often includes prayers for the repose of the soul, a eulogy which is normally delivered by an immediate family member, and funeral readings which can be done by close friends and relatives and in some cases, the offering of songs or hymns. All materials used for all these are usually chosen by the bereaved family or, if the death was something anticipated, the person who died could have chosen the reading materials and songs to be offered during his service in advance.

On the whole, it doesn't really matter how the bereaved family decides to hold the funeral tribute. What matters is that they did so in remembrance of their deceased loved one and to honor his memory in the most fitting way possible.

Catholic Funeral Readings

Catholic funeral services follow some relatively formal guidelines. However, times are changing and today some priests will design a special service which incorporates the traditions of the Catholic church with modern funeral readings, songs, or sermons.

A rosary or prayer service is held prior to the funeral and sometimes a wake (with an open casket, if desired) is held at the funeral home on the evening before the funeral service. Often, the bereaved family will request donations to a certain charity is made.

Repose

Many also choose to make a donation to the church in memory of the deceased. Friends and family of the deceased also request that a mass be said for the repose of the soul. The body is taken from the funeral home and taken to the church where the funeral Mass is held with closed casket.

After the Mass, the attendees proceed to the grave site for an additional ceremony and prayers are performed. Catholics are now able to choose cremation as an alternative to burial, which was once forbidden by the church law.

Catholic funeral readings can consist of biblical selections from the Liturgy of the Word Old and New Testament. The bereaved family members may request particular verses if desired to the priest for inclusion at the service.

The Catholic church usually has a Bereavement Ministry to help assist you in the planning of the Funeral Mass and help suggest ways for family and friends to be personally involved.

A sample of the Catholic funeral Mass includes opening rites for the receipt of body at the door, blessing with holy water, procession to alter with an opening song, penitential rite and opening prayer.

The Liturgy of the Word includes the first Catholic funeral readings from the Old Testament, a responsorial psalm or song, a second reading from the New Testament, Alleluia song, a reading by the priest from one of the Gospels, a homily given by the priest, prayer, a lighting of a candle for remembrance and a closing song. The readings are taken from specific sections from the Liturgy of the Word so it provides readings from both biblical books.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist consists of an optional presentation of the gifts, Eucharistic prayer, the Lord's prayer/sign of peace, communion and a song, and a personal reflection by a selected speaker.

The Mass concludes with a song of farewell and a recessional song. There are usually a set of preselected funeral readings which are given in the Funeral Mass but if you have specific readings you would like read or if the deceased had favorite verses, inform the priest or the Bereavement Minister and let them know of any special scriptures you would like included.

The funeral readings offer a help and encouraging word to the attendees and those in mourning. It provides comfort from a religious perspective.

Standing at the Crossroads of Life - Commit to a Path, Travel Light, and Remember to Breathe

Is there a crossroads moment in everyone's life- A fork in the proverbial road? A Mercury reader shared this question with me last week, and the profound significance of his words resonated deeply within me. For a long time I stood frozen at life's metaphorical crossroads, paralyzed by ambivalence as I struggled to hear my intuitive voice above the clatter of fear and trepidation.

It seems to grow increasingly difficult with age, to release the binding grips of fear. Life has a way of interfering with the idealistic dreams and zealous plans of youth. The years pass by so rapidly; perhaps it is only in the twilight of our lives that we are able to reflect back on the vestiges of the paths we have chosen and fully grasp the magnitude of our own power in shaping our destiny.

Slumber

I am haunted by reflections of a young woman with a wandering spirit and a restless soul, who lustfully craved adventure and never looked back once a decision was made. Driven by the motto "do it now and figure it out later otherwise live with regret", foreign countries were explored without itineraries or travel companions and frequent relocations relieved chronic boredom. Traditional desk jobs were confining, daily routine was a breeding ground for restlessness, and a conventional lifestyle felt like entrapment. I thrived on novel experiences and new beginnings, continuously clearing the slate and reinventing myself.

I recall the taste of pure unadulterated freedom in my late twenties, traveling by bus across the Costa Rican coast in a blinding rainstorm late at night, glancing at the handsome young stranger seated beside me with ebony eyes and skin blacker than the sultry night that enveloped us. Fear mingled with intrigue and the thrill was intoxicating; my senses were heightened and I never felt so alive. Somewhere along the way, that fiery young spirit fell into a prolonged slumber. Ten years down the road, I recognized the painful stagnation that insidiously descended upon my soul after spending several years standing frozen at the crossroads, terrified to commit to a path and move forward with my life.

Returning to the question raised about crossroad moments, my answer is a solid "yes", at some point in life we all are faced with pivotal and potentially life altering decisions. While the most obvious crossroads moments are easily recognizable and often agonizing life choices such as whether to end a long term relationship, terminate an unwanted pregnancy, or accept a marriage proposal, more subtle crossroad moments are not realized until long after the moment has passed. A casual trip to the local market can result in a chance encounter with a future mate and memories of a solitary journey through Central America can wake a sleeping soul years down the road.

While it is certainly comforting to rest crucial life decisions in the mighty hands of fate, the path of least resistance is not always the wisest route to take. The concept of human determination versus destiny is a loaded one, wrought with religious, philosophical, scientific and highly personal undercurrents. My personal preference is to lend credence to both sides of the spectrum, resulting in a complex interplay between personal freedom, self empowerment and predetermined fate.

Consider again the proverbial fork in the road. We have three choices: go left, go right, or stand still and languish in a state if inertia. The decision we make now will potentially shape our destiny for years to come. Ambivalence is a poison that clouds the mind and murders the spirit. It is always best to chose a path, take a leap of faith and keep moving forward, rather than succumb to the illusory shelter of inactivity.

This concept is a timely one for me, as I have finally busted through my self imposed shackles by making a conscious choice to release fear and move ahead. I feel like Rip Van Winkle emerging from a 20 year slumber and returning to his village, only to discover everything has changed and his wife and close friends are long gone. The village I must reclaim is that of my own soul. Like Rip Van Winkle, I face the reality that the past is gone and there is no turning back. However the only moment that ever truly matters is now.

As a person who has always been guilty of running from pain and charging ahead with reckless abandon, I am now focused on the power of standing still. However in standing still I am actually moving forward, because I stand now with peace and clarity of purpose rather than frozen in the grips of fear. My chosen path is neither the one I had always anticipated nor the easiest route to take at this point in time. I do not have the foggiest idea where I will end up, but one thing remains certain- I will grow and evolve in positive directions along the way.

It is not the destination that matters rather the journey, and life is really just one long journey with many crossroads along the way. As a seasoned traveler with many adventures yet to come, I plan to travel light, celebrate the crossroads, and stop to breathe now and then. Finally, if my destiny happens to entail a fellow explorer at some point along the way, I will certainly welcome the company.

Can Sleeping Pills Cause Weight - Inch Gain? The Answer Is Shocking

You are a health-conscious guy. It is easy to tell that by your ripped physique and obvious concern for exercise and cardiovascular health. What others can't see is your need to take sleeping pills to help you sleep. You are so wired up constantly from work, sports, exercise and just life in general that it's hard for you to sleep at night. Without sleeping pills, you would be awake all night long.

Recently though, you have noticed that you have gained a few pounds. You haven't changed your exercise regimen, nor have you really changed your diet. What gives? Could it be the sleeping pills?

Sleeping

In short, yes. People who have taken the sleeping pill known as Ambien for a fixed period of time noticed considerable weight gain. However, health professionals argue that Ambien does not cause a change in physical or mental characteristics that would make patients gain weight.

So why can sleeping pills cause weight/inch gain?

Ambien and other sleeping pills can cause weight/inch gain because the medication forces the body to relax, but can't shut off brain activity. If a brain is still active, it can make the body do things without a conscious realization, like sleepwalking. Patients have been proven to do things like drive, clean and eat while sleepwalking. The patients can overeat considerably each night after taking a sleeping pill and never know it. As you know, overeating can cause considerable weight gain over time.

Or, doctors also answer the question of why can sleeping pills cause weight/inch gain another way. Sleeping pills cause patients to sleep longer than they would have without taking the medication. You'll still be drowsy when waking up after taking sleeping pills and the sluggishness results in eating to gain energy.

We now know why can sleeping pills cause weight/inch gain, but how can you still take the medication and still keep your figure?

Well, you really shouldn't be on sleeping pills for more than a few weeks. Considerable weight gain is not that feasible in that amount of time. However, if you think you will be on Ambien or another type of sleeping pill for an extended period of time, ask your doctor to give you to lowest dose possible.

If you must take a high dose, make sure you put steps in place to combat any problems with sleepwalking and overeating before it occurs. Ask your spouse or roommates to help prevent you from doing things while you are sleeping or put reminders in place to make it obvious that you've done something the night before without realizing it.

And if you do all of this and still believe you are gaining weight quickly, see your doctor. It could be a sign of a more serious problem that your doctor must diagnose before a serious problem develops.

BiPAP Settings and Use

Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by the constant interruption of normal breathing while sleeping. When a patient experiences an "apnea" their breathing stops for a prolonged period of time. Some patients, after overcoming the apnea, will experience a hperpnea, which is rapid shallow breathing to compensate for the lack of oxygen experienced during the apnea. One treatment for sleep apnea is the use of a bilevel positive airway pressure machine, or BiPAP for short.

The function of a BiPAP machine is to provide positive air pressure to the patient to prevent the collapse of tissue in the throat, which would cause an apnea. In this way, BiPAP machines function similarly in purpose to a CPAP machine. However, a BiPAP machine administers two levels of pressure: an inspiratory positive airway pressure (IPAP) for when the patient inhales and an expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP) for when the patient exhales. This is so the patient experiences less resistance to exhalation that is present in CPAP machines, which administer a constant pressure during inhalation and exhalation alike. Though the functioning of the machines differ, the use of the machines are almost identical.

\"sleep Well\"

A typical Bilevel positive airway pressure machine machine is set up in a similar manner to a CPAP machine: hoses are attached from the machine to a delivery device such as a face mask or nasal pillows, which are then secured to the patient in a way that allows pressure to build. Once the mask is secured, the pressure builds and prevents the patient's airway from collapsing by increasing the pressure during inhalation and lowering the pressure during exhalation.

The settings on a Bilevel positive airway pressure machine machine are configured by a doctor or technician that has received the results from a sleep study that monitored the severity of the disorder and calculated the optimal pressure to administer through the machine. Because the Bilevel positive airway pressure machine machine comes preconfigured, the patient is not required to make any adjustments or complete any advanced setup options to use the machine.

The machines are usually configured to run in one of three settings controlling the change in the pressure from IPAP to EPAP and back again: spontaneous, timed, and spontaneous/timed. Spontaneous mode monitors when the pressure changes based on the patient's breathing and then changes from IPAP to EPAP or vice versa accordingly. Timed mode controls the pressure completely mechanically, switching pressure when a preconfigured amount of time passes. Spontaneous/Timed mode is when the pressure is adjusted based on the patient's breathing, and if the patient's breath should stop, the time will resume the pressure until normal breathing is again achieved.
BiPAP machines are similar in use to CPAP machines but differ in function.

For those who find the constant pressure of a CPAP machine too discomforting, a BiPAP machine is an excellent alternative. Switching from a CPAP machine to a BiPAP machine takes little effort, as most face masks have universal hookups and your previous titrations from your sleep test will still be relevant in configuring your Bilevel positive airway pressure machine machine, so there is little to worry about as far as inconvenience is concerned when switching to Bilevel positive airway pressure machine machines.

Top 4 Causes of Extreme Tiredness

We have all experienced being tired at one point or another- after a hectic day at work, following a vigorous aerobic exercise, after playing a sport. To feel tired after a highly physical activity is normal. But many people experience tiredness even upon waking up in the morning, despite a seemingly long sleep. Are you one of them? Do you often feel a lack of energy for apparently no reason at all? In order to address this problem, the first step is to know what is causing it.

Here are the 4 most common causes of extreme tiredness:

\"sleep Well\"

4th Most Common Cause: Medical Conditions

Many diseases and disorders can trigger fatigue, including the flu, anemia, and sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome. Hormonal problems, heart ailments, and cancer are also known to cause fatigue. Certain medications, especially those used to treat chronic illnesses, also bring about extreme tiredness. The source of one's extreme tiredness can be even harder to trace if one has undiagnosed medical problems. When experiencing abnormal physiological conditions, it is best to see a doctor.

3rd Most Common Cause: Emotional concerns and stress.

Studies suggest that psychological factors are present in at least 50% of fatigue cases. Emotional concerns may include depression, chronic anxiety, emotional stress, and excessive grief, especially that due to loss of a loved one.

2nd Most Common Cause: Workplace issues

This is widespread especially in the working population who juggle their work priorities, family concerns, and social life. Examples of tiredness triggers in the workplace are shift work and poor workplace practices such as working long hours, hard physical labor, irregular working hours (such as rotating shifts), stressful work environment, and even boredom. Social factors at work such as working alone with little or no interaction with others and fixed concentration on a repetitive task are also known culprits. Workplace stress caused by a wide range of factors including job dissatisfaction, heavy workload, conflicts with superiors or colleagues, bullying, constant and unwanted change, and threats to job security are also known culprits. Recently, burnout among workaholics, the result of striving too hard in the work area while neglecting everything else, tends to drain all their energies from other aspects of their lives. Even among the unemployed, financial pressures, feelings of failure or guilt, and the emotional exhaustion of prolonged job hunting can lead to fatigue.

And finally the most common cause of extreme tiredness: Unhealthy lifestyle choices

In the absence of a medical illness, psychological problems, and work-related stress, lifestyle choice is the most prevalent cause of extreme tiredness among all ages. Common lifestyle choices that can cause fatigue include: lack of sleep, too much sleep, intake of alcohol and drugs, sleep disturbances, absence or lack of regular exercise, and poor diet. In some cases, extreme tiredness is caused by a combination of these factors.

Diagnosis can be difficult making treatment even harder. Consequences of extreme tiredness can even be worse. To avoid this plague, it is best that we know the triggers and avoid them at all cost. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Sleep Wrinkles - Preventing and Repairing Them

As we age, the appearance of sleep wrinkles, those facial lines that develop from sleeping with your face against a pillow, becomes much more prominent. This should come as no surprise if you consider how much of one's life is spent sleeping. If you are getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night, you sleep 1/3 of your life. Consequently, by age 60, you will have slept 20 years. It is obvious why sleeping on our face eventually leads to creases that become permanently etched in the surface of the skin. Sleep wrinkles are much easier to prevent than they are to repair. As a result, you should make every effort to keep from getting them in the first place.

The most effective and least costly method for preventing sleep wrinkles is to sleep on your back. People who sleep in this position simply do not develop these wrinkles. Chinese women recognized this fact ages ago, and always slept on their backs using concave porcelain pillows. If you are unaccustomed to sleeping in this position, you might try placing a pillow under you knees to decrease stress on the lower back and increase your comfort.

Sleep

If you are unable to sleep on your back, using a pillow that minimizes facial wrinkling is another possibility. Sleep on a big, soft, non-synthetic pillow that you are able to fluff and squish. Those with natural fill, such as down and feathers, offer the most comfort, long-term performance, and adjustability. This type of pillow supports the head while providing softness, eliminating pressure points, and increasing facial circulation to reduce squashing and sleep wrinkles. There are also pillows available made specifically for preventing sleep wrinkles. They support the head while keeping the face and eye tissue away from the pillow.

Choosing the correct pillowcase on which to sleep can also deter the formation of sleep creases. If you awaken with these unsightly lines in the morning, your cotton pillowcase may be to blame. Instead of cotton, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase that allows your face to slide across the pillow thereby minimizing skin wrinkling. Another option for not only preventing sleep lines, but also repairing those which you already have, is to use a copper technology pillowcase. It is imbedded with copper micro fibers which serve to repair your skin as you sleep. Copper has been proven to stimulate collagen production thereby helping reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Unfortunately, if you already have sleep wrinkles, they may be difficult to alleviate. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity. When the skin becomes creased while sleeping, it no longer readily snaps back when the head is not resting on the pillow, as it did when we were younger. Since these wrinkles are not the result of muscle contractions, such as worry lines or crow's feet, products with Botox-like benefits are ineffective. In order to correct them, new collagen needs to form under the wrinkles to push up the skin from below. There are many skin care products on the market that contain various peptides that promote the formation of collagen. If topical formulations are ineffective, you might want to consult your dermatologist about a wrinkle filler such as Restylane.

40th Birthday Cake Ideas

A 40th birthday is a great time to celebrate! If you're going to be throwing a birthday party for someone who is reaching that milestone, here are some 40th birthday cake ideas for fabulous cake possibilities.

First, consider the old standby. A simple cake should work for this one, but have the number 40 written as big as possible. Then, surround the edges of the cake with 40 candles. Don't forget to light them. And don't forget to have a fire extinguisher standing by.

Slumber

Second, why not try a photo reproduction cake? These are becoming more and more popular and they can be very beautifully done. You'll need a favorite photograph of the birthday gal or guy. Maybe one with the spouse, or even with the kids. Phone around to local bakeries to find one that has the capability of turning the photo into a cake topper. They'll make an actual edible photo to put on top of the cake. Most cakes I've seen like this are real conversation pieces. Everyone loves them. And then you get to eat it, and it's always fun to see who gets to eat Uncle Larry's head.

Third, try the hobby angle. Does your brother like to fish? Then, have a cake decorated with a fishing theme. Does your aunt like to golf? Golf-themed cakes can be super cute. There was a very beautiful cake at my local bakery that was decorated with shoes and handbags for a woman who loved shopping. Whatever the hobby, the bakery can do it!

Next, you can't forget the "Root for the Hometeam" cake. Does your family love the Razorbacks? A cake in the shape of a hog, covered in bright red icing will always make people happy. And then you get to make fun of everyone because after they eat the icing, their lips and mouth will be bright red for the rest of the day. Any team colors or logos will make a super 40th birthday cake really special.

Lastly, don't scoff at the tried and true tombstone/over-the-hill cake. Yes, it's been done and overdone. But it also makes people laugh every time. And, truly, the 40th birthday is a great time to poke a little fun.

Whatever cake you choose, make sure to take a picture. Because the recipient is going to remember this birthday for a long time!

Falling Asleep Instantly

If you are looking for techniques on how to fall asleep instantly then you are not alone. More and more people around the world are now dependent on some form of medication to get a good night's sleep. And, who really wants that? You don't want to rely on sleeping pills for the rest of your life, do you?

Whereas some people fall asleep the second their head touches the pillow, others lay awake tossing and turning the rest of the night. How unfair. If you belong to the second group and want to learn how to fall asleep instantly, then you've come to the right place.

Asleep

Falling asleep may be a complicated matter. You may feel sleepy and tired at the end of the day but still suffer from a lack of sleep during the overnight hours. However, there are several techniques that can help you to finally get some shut eye.

1. The room you sleep in should be pitch dark. Block all outside lights from coming through the windows and eliminate all interior light. Consider covering the alarm clock since you won't be obsessed about the time and get rid of the light.

2. Consider an exercise called progressive relaxation. It works by going from your toes to your head and FEEL every body part, go from your toes to your knees to your upper legs to your thighs, etc.
FEEL the weight of each body part and then slowly relax the body party as you slowly let it go into the bed. Include every body part that is connecting each one to the next, and go from your toes to your head with a short pause in between.

3. Meditation is a perfect way to fall asleep instantly. Choose a place in the house where you won't be disturbed for at least an hour. Ensure that it's quiet and conducive to meditation. Do deep breathing exercises as you sit on a chair or floor and let the worries of the day go by. By doing this each day, you'll have the chance to unload your worries and stress, allowing the body to accept relaxation and, ultimately, sleep.

4. If you're working in shifts and need to sleep in the daytime, it can be hard to block out the distractions of the outside world. By covering your eyes with a sleep mask and using earplugs, you can find the peaceful setting that you need to finally drift off to sleep.

5. Another tip on how to fall asleep instantly is to consult your doctor about herbal sleep aids. Ask for herbs that are considered effective and are safe to use as an insomnia treatment. Chamomile is an herb that is mostly taken as a calming tea; take a cup of this herbal tea before you retire and you will find yourself more relaxed and less stressed, ready to hit the covers!

Other herbs that may be prescribed are California poppy, Passion flower and Kava kava. These are all common ingredients for natural sleeping remedies that not only promote sleep but cure agitation and restlessness as well.

6. A massage can greatly help persons fall asleep instantly. Ask your spouse to give you a massage before going to bed... either a full body massage or a neck, shoulders and back massage. Massaging the tension areas will help reduce stress, which will help you to fall asleep quickly and stay asleep the entire night.

7. Another tip you can try is visualizing something that bores you. You may be able to recapture the tired and sleepy feelings you had during these boring situations. This won't work for everyone, but for those who are good at visualizing this might be the best tip on how to fall asleep instantly.

8. What makes a lot of people instantly fall asleep is music. Listening to soft and soothing music or some other kind of audio sounds can greatly help the process of falling asleep. In fact, there are a few CDs that have especially been designed to help people with insomnia. Some have soothing sounds such as heartbeats, ocean waves, leaves in the wind or something of a similar nature.

9. Some people may experience insomnia because of personal problems that they worry about too much. If this is the primary reason why you cannot sleep, then talk to someone or write a simple journal about your thoughts and the possible solutions for each problem. Unloading your stressors may help you to sleep soundly at night.

10. Environmental conditioning is another way to sleep instantly at night. Remove all things that can distract you from sleeping including the television, laptop, office documents, cell phones, etc. Create a room that you will find comfortable to sleep in. Make sure the mattress is comfortable and adjust the lighting and room temperature to suit your needs.

If all else fails and you still want to know how to fall asleep instantly, then it might be a good time to talk to your doctor. See what he/she advises you to take; they may also prescribe you some type of sleep medication. Be sure you find out about any side effect these medications may have and about the adverse reactions to other medicines you could experience. Your doctor should also suggest how long you can use this type of medication. After all, you want to know how to fall asleep instantly, the natural way.

Falling Asleep Instantly

What if you just can't get to sleep? I know how hard it can be to lie in bed just tossing and turning before you finally get to sleep at 6 A.M., but if you want to fall asleep the second your head touches the pillow you'll just need to learn a few easy methods that work amazingly well. These techniques are simple to pick up and most methods don't take much practice. You can read how to do it here: How long to go without sleep

The Best Natural Sleep Remedy There Is!

As you probably know, there are numerous natural sleep remedies out there. Some of them work pretty effectively, while others, well, not so much. The question you're probably asking yourself is: which one is the best natural sleep remedy? Although opinions tend to vary, most studies show that the best natural sleep remedy is, in fact, sound.

"Sound? As in noise?" To a degree, yes. However, not just any noise is going to put you to sleep and keep you to sleep -- it's not that convenient. The "sound" that experts are talking about are actually specially composed sounds that will help the brain to get into a more natural rhythm; a rhythm that will help you to sleep.

Sleeping

"So, what are these sounds?"  Well, it's tough to say, as different natural sleep remedy CD's will contain different things. Generally speaking though, most sleeptrack programs will be made of gentle tones, pulses, and rhythmic beats. Nothing overbearing mind you, just gentle sounds that actually make you feel more comfortable when trying to sleep.

"How do these sounds help me get to sleep?"  Without getting too much into detail, let's just say that the sounds penetrate your body and gently massage your subconscious mind until you are fast asleep. The effects are pretty much instantaneous, yet your conscious mind won't know or be at all aware of them. How will you know it's working then? Simple, you'll know when you wake up the next morning feeling both refreshed and well rested, that's how.

A bit skeptical about this natural sleep remedy? Well, you have every right to be, as it does sound a bit on the strange side to tell you the truth. However, as strange as this natural sleep remedy may seem, "sound" really is the best way to reclaim peaceful sleep. If you don't want to give this sleep remedy a try, that's perfectly fine; as there are other, if less effective, means of eliminating insomnia and getting better sleep. The choice is ultimately up to you.
